Why We Worry About What Other People Think

How often do you worry about what other people think about you? Have you ever had a dream or idea but didn't go through with it because one person said they didn't like it? I struggle with being a people pleaser. I don't like to disappoint people, ever. So when others try to say what I should do with my life or make a "prediction" on where my life is heading, I really give it more consideration than I should. Why do we spend so much time worrying about what other people think about us? I think the truth to the majority of why we battle with this so much is that we are so afraid of being different. Instead of being ourselves, we would rather be like others and fit in. We also don't want to disappoint others. So when someone directs us to not do something that may disappoint them, we usually go with what they want us to do. You have the choice everyday to be yourself instead of striving to be like everyone else. You have the choice to not worry about what other people think about you. It is much easier said than done. Words have a lot of weight, it is even heavier when someone you look up to or admire speaks hurtful words over your life.

I've been told encouraging words like, "You're going to do great things." But, just as people have lifted me up, I've had a few bring me down. When I was younger, an adult told my mom "She isn't going to do anything with her life." Now maybe that adult thought that because I was a hyper, over talkative kid who didn't really pay attention in class. I remember my mom telling me that story a few years ago and it really hurt. However, when I look back at those years I was full of energy and creativity, I see a kid who just wanted to be heard in school. I have accomplished a lot since I was that 3rd grade over active kid and now I'm working on my master's degree. You may have had someone make a similar claim on your life. They tried to bring you down before you even had a chance to stand up. Let me speak some truth to you today.

Someone else's prediction on your life has nothing on God's provision on your life.

You don't have to accept those negative claims. You can proclaim God's provision on your life instead. God already knows the direction of your life. Trust that he is going before you and making a way for you. Don't allow others to bring down what God is bringing up in you. Walk with more confidence today that the opinions of others have no weight compared to God's truth over your life. You don't have to worry about what others think of you, your purpose is already set in place by the creator of all things.
